Filament length to weight converter

One meter of 1.75 mm PLA weighs about 2.98 g, so a 1 kg spool holds roughly 335 m. Weight depends on the material’s density and the filament diameter: 2.85 mm filament weighs about 2.65 times as much per meter. Pick your material below to convert either way.

Assumptions behind this estimate (2)
  • Formula: grams = π × (diameter ÷ 2)² × length × density, with diameter and length in centimeters.
  • Real filament diameter varies by a few hundredths of a millimeter, so expect a few percent difference from the label.

How do you convert filament meters to grams?

Work out the filament’s cross-section area, multiply by the length to get its volume, then multiply by density. For 1.75 mm filament the cross-section is π × 0.0875² ≈ 0.024 cm², so one meter (100 cm) is about 2.41 cm³ — 2.98 g of PLA at 1.24 g/cm³.

When do I need this?

When a slicer reports filament in meters but you price by weight, when a sample or spool end is sold by length, or when you want to check whether a partly used spool will finish a print — for that, the filament remaining calculator works from the spool’s weight.

Frequently asked questions

Why does ABS give more meters per kilogram than PETG?

ABS is less dense (about 1.04 g/cm³ versus about 1.27 for PETG), so the same weight takes up more volume and makes a longer strand.

Is 1.75 mm filament exactly 1.75 mm?

Usually within a few hundredths of a millimeter. That small variation changes the weight per meter by a few percent, which is why converted figures are approximate.

Does color change the weight?

Pigments and fillers change density slightly; silk, glow, wood and metal-filled filaments can differ more. Use the density from the datasheet for those.

Estimates for planning. Results depend on the numbers you enter — use the gram, hour and ml figures from your slicer, and your real material and power prices. Material densities are typical values; check your spool or bottle datasheet for exact figures.
